The Cherokee Indian Reservation, already with the highest sales tax in the stale, raised its tax from 5 to 6 cents Tuesday. The Polk County Commissioners will meet today at 3 p.m. at the courthouse in Columbus. The Tryon School Board meets tonight at 7:30 at the high school. The Thermal Belt Stamp Club will meet tonight at 7:30 in the NCNB Conference Room, Tryon. The Tryon Fireman’s Christmas Parade is Wednesday at 3 p.m. Following the parade at the rear of the Fire Hall the firemen will distribute bags of fruit and candy to the children. Santa will talk to the children and the firemen will have more fun than the children. All former members are invited to the Gay Blades Garden Club Tea Thursday at 3 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Frank McFarland, Jr. Marion Florence Rardin, daughter of Mrs. M. J. C. 28782 Retires Henry Huntsinger The N. C. State employees of Polk County gave a surprise retirement party for Henry Huntsinger Friday night at Caro- Mi Dining Room. Mr. Huntsinger was presented a watch by his co- workers of many years. Mr. Huntsinger retired November 30th as County Road Foreman or Supervisor. He had served in this capacity since 1967 when he succeeded the late Fletcher Edwards. He began working on the roads in Polk County on August 25th, 1947 and counting his service time and sick leave, he has been a public servant for over 40 years For short periods of time he worked in Rutherford and Transylvania counties. He is married to the former Hazel Bradley and they have one son Mike, and “ granddaughters. He is a member and a deacon in the Mill Spring Baptist Church and was member of the Mill Sprine Ruritan Club for many years He is a member of the Jeff L. Benfield The Polk County Board of Education has elected Dr. James E. Benfield as the new Superintendent of Polk County Schools. Dr. Benfield is at present with the Watauga County Schools. His appointment will become effective January 11, 1982. He received his Bachelor of Science, Elementary Education with concentration in science and social studies in 1970 from Appalachian State University and his Master of Arts, Public School Administration in 1973 from Appalachian State University. He received his Doctor of Education with a concentration in school administration in 1977 from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University at Blacksburg, Va.
